Portland

The Forest City

Maine's biggest and perhaps most vibrant city, Portland was established as a fishing village in 1633 and grew to become New England's largest port.
Venture out of the city with trips to Ogunquit (Ogunquit Museum of American Art, Perkins Cove, &more), Boston (Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall Marketplace, &more) and West Rattlesnake Mountain (in Holderness). And it doesn't end there: indulge your thirst for a good beer at Allagash Brewing Company, steep yourself in history at Harvard University, visit a coastal fixture at Nubble Lighthouse, and wander the streets of Old Port.

To find other places to visit, traveler tips, and more tourist information, go to the Portland itinerary builder tool.

If you are flying in from South Africa, the closest major aiports are Portland International Jetport, Portsmouth International at Pease Airport and Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. Expect a daytime high around 13°C in April, and nighttime lows around 1°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 16th (Fri) so you can travel back home.
