The Forest City

Maine's biggest and perhaps most vibrant city, Portland was established as a fishing village in 1633 and grew to become New England's largest port.
Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Portland: Ocean Ave (in Kennebunkport), Boston (Massachusetts State House, Freedom Trail, &more) and Wells Reserve at Laudholm (in Wells). And it doesn't end there: get to know the fascinating history of Marginal Way Walkway, visit a coastal fixture at Portland Head Light, see what you can catch with a fishing tour, and explore the striking landscape at Perkins Cove.

Palo Alto to Portland is an approximately 11.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or do a combination of train, subway, and bus. The time zone changes from Pacific Standard Time to Eastern Standard Time, which is usually a 3 hour difference. Traveling from Palo Alto in May, things will get slightly colder in Portland: highs are around 64°F and lows about 45°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 25th (Mon) early enough to travel back home.
