San Juan — 2 nights

Walled City

Founded by the Spanish in 1521, San Juan is the oldest city under U.S. jurisdiction and one of the oldest in the Americas.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery and Paseo de la Princesa. Visiting Fishing Charters & Tours and Aventura Cueva Ventana will get you outdoors. Step out of San Juan to go to Arecibo and see Cueva del Indio, which is approximately 1h 10 min away. There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Catedral Basilica Menor de San Juan Bautista, get some fabulous bargains at Coach Outlet Store, and stroll around Parque de las Palomas.

Dusseldorf, Germany to San Juan is an approximately 15-hour combination of train and flight. You can also fly. The time zone difference moving from Central European Standard Time (CET) to Atlantic Standard Time (AST) is minus 5 hours. Traveling from Dusseldorf in May, expect San Juan to be much hotter, temps between 36°C and 28°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 21st (Sun) to allow time to drive to Rincon.

Rincon — 2 nights

Corner

A seaside playground in the Caribbean, Rincon was a small agricultural and fishing town until it hosted the 1968 World Surfing Championship.
Start off your visit on the 22nd (Mon): enjoy the sand and surf at Steps Beach, enjoy the sea views from Faro de Punta Higuera, and then see some colorful creatures with a scuba or snorkeling tour. Here are some ideas for day two: kick back and relax at Sandy Beach, stroll through Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, and then stroll through Playa Crashboat.

Drive from San Juan to Rincon in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or do a combination of shuttle and car. In May in Rincon, expect temperatures between 36°C during the day and 31°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 23rd (Tue) early enough to go by car to Ponce.

Ponce — 2 nights

Ponce is both a city and a municipality in the southern part of Puerto Rico. Kick off your visit on the 24th (Wed): see the interesting displays at Museo Castillo Serralles, explore the world behind art at Museo de Arte de Ponce, and then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Cathedral of our Lady of Guadaloupe. On the 25th (Thu), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: examine the collection at Parque de Bombas, then admire the striking features of Casa Wiechers-Villaronga, and then see some colorful creatures with Island Scuba.

Drive from Rincon to Ponce in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of taxi, flight, and shuttle. Traveling from Rincon in May, things will get a bit cooler in Ponce: highs are around 33°C and lows about 27°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 25th (Thu) so you can travel to Isla de Vieques.

Isla de Vieques — 4 nights

Isla Nena

For sixty years until 2003, most of the Isla de Vieques was closed off to the public, with the US Navy using the island's beaches and surrounding waters for drills and testing of new military machinery, such as bombs.
Discover out-of-the-way places like Playa Caracas and Horseback Riding Tours. Get in touch with nature at Playa Pata Prieta and Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. There's much more to do: add some adventure to your tour with a kayaking and canoeing tour, take in the waterfront at Mosquito Pier, tour the pleasant surroundings at Balneario Sun Bay, and stop by Isla Vida.

Traveling by combination of car and ferry from Ponce to Isla de Vieques takes 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of car, bus, taxi, and ferry; or do a combination of shuttle and flight. Expect a daytime high around 34°C in May, and nighttime lows around 28°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 29th (Mon) to allow time to fly to Culebra.

Culebra — 2 nights

Little Island

With much of Culebra a nature refuge, the tropical island has been protected from overdevelopment, chain hotels, and the cruise set.
Start off your visit on the 30th (Tue): enjoy the sand and surf at Playa Zoni, head off the coast to Culebrita, and then enjoy the sea views from Culebrita Lighthouse. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: stroll through Playa Tamarindo and then take a memorable tour with Tours.
