When you arrive in tiny San Simeon, which lies halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, you can see why William Randolph Hearst chose this coastal locale for his famous hilltop castle.
On the 31st (Tue), admire the majestic nature at Leffingwell Landing, admire the majestic nature at San Simeon State Park, kick back and relax at William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach, take in the waterfront at San Simeon Pier, then stop by Sebastian General Store, and finally do a tasting at Hearst Ranch Winery. On the next day, get great views at Ragged Point Overlook, explore the striking landscape at Jade Cove, then kick back and relax at Sand Dollar Beach, and finally explore the different monuments and memorials at Cambria Cemetery.

You can drive from Big Sur to San Simeon in 2.5 hours. Another option is to do a combination of bus and car. Traveling from Big Sur in December, San Simeon is slightly colder at night with lows of 0°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 1st (Wed) so you can drive to South Lake Tahoe.

Drive from San Simeon to South Lake Tahoe in 7.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of bus and flight; or do a combination of train and bus. In January, South Lake Tahoe is slightly colder than San Simeon - with highs of 8°C and lows of -8°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 3rd (Fri) so you can drive to Olympic Valley.
