Drive from Washington DC to Cape May in 4 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and bus; or take a bus. When traveling from Washington DC in September, plan for a bit cooler days in Cape May, with highs around 29°C, while nights are about the same with lows around 19°C. You'll have a few hours on the 6th (Fri) to wrap things up before traveling to Brooklyn.
