Maine's biggest and perhaps most vibrant city, Portland was established as a fishing village in 1633 and grew to become New England's largest port.
Take a break from the city and head to Avalanche Falls and Wiggly Bridge and Steedman Woods. Get some historical perspective at Fort Gorges and High Street Historic District. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Portland: Wright Museum of WWII (in Wolfeboro), Abenaki Tower (in Tuftonboro) and Mount Major State Forest (in Alton Bay). There's lots more to do: get to know the fascinating history of Marginal Way Walkway, learn about winemaking at Maine Mead Works, indulge your thirst for a good beer at Rising Tide Brewing Company, and enjoy the sea views from Portland Breakwater Lighthouse.
