In many ways much more Asian than American, Honolulu is Hawaii's largest city and its center of government, transportation, commerce, and tourism.
Relax by the water at Waikiki Beach and Kailua Beach Park. Step out of the city life by going to Diamond Head State Monument and Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. Explore Honolulu's surroundings by going to Haleiwa (Sunset Beach Park & Waimea Bay), Polynesian Cultural Center (in Laie) and Swim with Dolphins (in Waianae). There's much more to do: explore the different monuments and memorials at USS Arizona Memorial, buy something for everyone on your list at Ala Moana Center, examine the collection at USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park, and make a trip to Battleship Missouri Memorial.

To see ratings, maps, and other tourist information, read Honolulu day trip planning site .

Lahaina, Maui

Once the booming capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, the tropical paradise of Lahaina still remains one of Maui's top vacation attractions, providing both culture and recreation.
Get some historical perspective at Maria Lanakila Catholic Church and Saint Theresa Roman Catholic Church. Take a break from the city and head to Haleakala Crater and Hana Highway - Road to Hana. Change things up with a short trip to Wailea Beach in Wailea (about 46 minutes away). There's lots more to do: enjoy the sand and surf at Ka'anapali Beach, stroll through Napili Beach, get up close to creatures of the deep with a dolphin and whale watching tour, and pause for some photo ops at Lahaina Jodo Mission.

Take the guesswork out of planning a Lahaina vacation by using our trip itinerary maker.

You can fly from Honolulu to Lahaina in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and ferry; or do a combination of flight and bus. Expect a daytime high around 30°C in March, and nighttime lows around 22°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 1st (Wed) early enough to travel to Kailua-Kona.

Kailua-Kona, Island of Hawaii

Thanks to its favorable location near a mountain range blocking the northeasterly trade winds, Kailua-Kona gets little rainfall, allowing adventure seekers and nature lovers a chance to enjoy over 300 days of sunshine each year.
Kick off your visit on the 2nd (Thu): get engrossed in the history at Kona Coffee Living History Farm, contemplate the long history of Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park, then take an in-depth tour of H.N. Greenwell Store Museum, and finally fulfill a lifelong dream with a swim-with-the-dolphins experience. Here are some ideas for day two: explore the striking landscape of Puukohola National Historic Park, then enjoy the sand and surf at Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area, and then look for gifts at Waikoloa Beach Resort.

To find ratings, more things to do, traveler tips, and tourist information, read our Kailua-Kona day trip planner .

You can fly from Lahaina to Kailua-Kona in 4 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of bus, flight, and taxi; or do a combination of bus and flight. Hilo, Island of Hawaii

One of the island of Hawaii's major towns, Hilo contains a mix of Asian and Polynesian cultures and is known for its proximity to a national park encompassing two active volcanoes.
On the 4th (Sat), trek along Kilauea Iki Trailhead, see the interesting displays at Jagger Museum, then view the masterpieces at Volcano Art Center, then take in the dramatic scenery at Akaka Falls State Park, and finally enjoy the sand and surf at Laupahoehoe Beach Park. Keep things going the next day: take in the dramatic scenery at Rainbow Falls and then get curious at Imiloa Astronomy Center.

You can drive from Kailua-Kona to Hilo in 2 hours. Another option is to take a bus. Traveling from Kailua-Kona in April, plan for slightly colder nights in Hilo, with lows around 22°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 5th (Sun) to allow enough time to travel back home.
