Although urban sprawl remains synonymous with Houston, most of the city's tourist attractions lie within the relatively small downtown area, surrounded by diverse neighborhoods housing the nation's biggest African-American, Asian-American, and Latino communities.
Step off the beaten path and head to Children's Museum Houston and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Kids will enjoy The Houston Museum of Natural Science and Cypress Trails Ranch. The adventure continues: get to know the resident critters at Houston Zoo.

Get in touch with nature at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and Pacific Beach. Family-friendly places like La Jolla Shores Park and Old Town San Diego State Historic Park will thrill your kids. Step out of San Diego to go to Alpine and see Lions, Tigers & Bears, which is approximately 48 minutes away.
