Ketchikan — 2 nights

The narrow city of Ketchikan clings to the bluffs that form Revillagigedo Island's southwestern shore.

Washington DC to Ketchikan is an approximately 13-hour combination of flight and ferry. You can also do a combination of train, bus, and ferry. Due to the time zone difference, you'll gain 4 hours traveling from Washington DC to Ketchikan. Traveling from Washington DC in December, you will find days in Ketchikan are little chillier (40°F), and nights are about the same (33°F). Cap off your sightseeing on the 30th (Thu) early enough to travel to Sitka.

Sitka — 3 nights

The City and Borough of Sitka, formerly Novo-Arkhangelsk, or New Archangel under Russian rule, is a unified city-borough located on Baranof Island and the southern half of Chichagof Island in the Alexander Archipelago of the Pacific Ocean (part of the Alaska Panhandle), in the U.S. state of Alaska. Sitka is known for wildlife, historic sites, and parks. Your trip includes some of its best attractions: stroll through Sitka National Historic Park/Totem Park, steep yourself in history at Russian Bishop's House, shop like a local with Island Artists Gallery, and trek along Herring Cove Trail.

Traveling by combination of ferry and flight from Ketchikan to Sitka takes 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can ride a ferry. In December, plan for daily highs up to 42°F, and evening lows to 34°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 2nd (Sun) to allow enough time to fly to Skagway.

Traveling by flight from Sitka to Skagway takes 5 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or ride a ferry. In January, Skagway is a bit cooler than Sitka - with highs of 36°F and lows of 28°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 5th (Wed) early enough to ride a ferry to Haines.

Sitting on the shores of Alaska's longest fjord and surrounded by mountains, the port city of Haines boasts spectacular scenery.

Traveling by ferry from Skagway to Haines takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can ride a ferry; or fly. In January, daytime highs in Haines are 33°F, while nighttime lows are 25°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 8th (Sat) early enough to travel to Juneau.

Juneau is an unusual state capital in many respects.
