In many ways much more Asian than American, Honolulu is Hawaii's largest city and its center of government, transportation, commerce, and tourism.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Swim with Dolphins and National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. Your itinerary includes some good beach time at Kailua Beach Park and Waikiki Beach. Change things up with a short trip to Byodo-In Temple in Kaneohe (about 32 minutes away). There's lots more to do: go for a walk through Diamond Head State Monument, contemplate the waterfront views at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, tour the pleasant surroundings at Koko Crater Railway Trail, and appreciate the history behind Queen Liliuokalani Statue.

To see ratings, maps, more things to do, and other tourist information, refer to the Honolulu trip builder tool .

Houston to Honolulu is an approximately 10.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of car and flight; or do a combination of bus and flight. The time zone changes from Central Standard Time (CST) to Hawaii Standard Time (HST), which is usually a -4 hour difference. When traveling from Houston in July, plan for a bit cooler days in Honolulu, with highs around 88°F, while nights are about the same with lows around 75°F. On the 9th (Tue), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel to Hanalei.

Hanalei is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kauai County, Hawaii, United States. Step off the beaten path and head to Tunnels Beach and Dolphin & Whale Watching. 7 Artists Gallery and Wai`oli Hui`ia Church are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Change things up with these side-trips from Hanalei: Awaawapuhi Trail (in Kekaha) and Waimea (Waimea Canyon State Park & Koke'e Mountains). There's still lots to do: trek along Kalalau Trail, immerse yourself in nature at Na Pali Coast State Park, identify plant and animal life at Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge, and kick back and relax at Secret Beach.

For where to stay, other places to visit, more things to do, and other tourist information, read our Hanalei trip itinerary planning site .

Do a combination of flight and taxi from Honolulu to Hanalei in 3 hours. In July, plan for daily highs up to 84°F, and evening lows to 74°F. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 15th (Mon) to allow time for travel to Kailua-Kona.

Kailua-Kona

Thanks to its favorable location near a mountain range blocking the northeasterly trade winds, Kailua-Kona gets little rainfall, allowing adventure seekers and nature lovers a chance to enjoy over 300 days of sunshine each year.

When in Kailua-Kona, make a side trip to see Waialea Beach in Waimea, approximately 46 minutes away. Next up on the itinerary: fulfill a lifelong dream with a swim-with-the-dolphins experience, get engrossed in the history at Kona Coffee Living History Farm, sample the tasty concoctions at Kona Brewing Company, and identify plant and animal life at Kealakekua Bay.
