Hilo — 8 nights

One of the island of Hawaii's major towns, Hilo contains a mix of Asian and Polynesian cultures and is known for its proximity to a national park encompassing two active volcanoes.
Explore hidden gems such as Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden and Richardson Beach Park. Get in touch with nature at Manini'owali Beach (Kua Bay) and Nature & Wildlife Tours. Explore Hilo's surroundings by going to Volcano (Jagger Museum & Akatsuka Orchid Gardens), Laupahoehoe Beach Park (in Laupahoehoe) and Kailua-Kona (Mokuaikaua Church, Boat Tours & Water Sports, &more). There's still lots to do: step off the mainland to explore Coconut Island, see the interesting displays at Pacific Tsunami Museum, Head underground at Kaumana Caves Park, and take in the dramatic scenery at Akaka Falls State Park.

Lisbon, Portugal to Hilo is an approximately 25-hour flight. The time zone difference moving from Western European Standard Time (WET) to Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time (HST) is minus 10 hours. Plan for a bit warmer nights when traveling from Lisbon in August since evenings lows in Hilo dip to 25°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 9th (Tue) early enough to drive to Waimea.

Waimea — 4 nights

A vast agricultural land with one of the largest cattle ranches in the United States, Waimea embraces its ranching roots.
You'll visit kid-friendly attractions like Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area and 49 Black Sand Beach. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Dolphin Quest and Mauna Kea Beach. Venture out of the city with trips to Waikoloa Petroglyph Preserve (in Waikoloa), Keokea Beach Park (in Kapaau) and Hawaiian Vanilla Company (in Paauilo). There's still lots to do: wander the wide-open spaces of Kahua Ranch, explore the striking landscape of Lapakahi State Historical Park, get great views at Waipiʻo Valley Lookout, and admire the verdant scenery at Pololu Valley Lookout.

You can drive from Hilo to Waimea in 1.5 hours. Another option is to take a bus. Traveling from Hilo in August, you will find days in Waimea are slightly colder (26°C), and nights are much colder (11°C). Finish your sightseeing early on the 13th (Sat) to allow enough time to drive to Captain Cook.

Captain Cook — 4 nights

A small town with big ocean views, Captain Cook lies on top of an ancient fault line that was responsible for creating the nearby Kealakekua Bay thousands of years ago.
Step off the beaten path and head to Papakōlea Green Sand Beach and Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park. Escape the urban bustle at Punalu‘U Beach and Kahalu'u Beach Park. There's still lots to do: contemplate the waterfront views at Honaunau Bay, kick back and relax at Ho‘Okena Beach Park, get close to the beloved marine mammals with My Kona Adventures, and stop by Kona Joe Coffee.

Expect a bit warmer weather when traveling from Waimea in August: highs in Captain Cook hover around 36°C, while lows dip to 29°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 17th (Wed) so you can travel to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The Big Island
