Whereas most national parks are primarily devoted to showcasing unique and special landscapes, Mesa Verde National Park focuses on ancient human habitation.
On the 10th (Fri), hike along Farming Terraces, explore the ancient world of Spruce Tree House, then delve into the distant past at Balcony House, and finally explore the ancient world of Cliff Palace. Keep things going the next day: take a memorable drive along Ruins Road, make a trip to Step House, and then delve into the distant past at Long House.

Durango

Originally a frontier mining town, Durango is known today for its scenic setting, outdoor activities, and the 1880s steam-powered railway that takes visitors through sections of the mountains where roads don't reach.
Step out of the city life by going to River Rafting & Tubing and Trimble Hot Springs. There's much more to do: see the interesting displays at Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and Museum, do a tasting at Four Leaves Winery, hike along Animas River Trail, and take in the exciting artwork at Scenic Aperture Gallery.

Drive from Mesa Verde National Park to Durango in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of taxi and bus; or do a combination of taxi and shuttle. Expect a daytime high around 82°F in August, and nighttime lows around 51°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 14th (Tue) early enough to travel to Aspen.

Known as a ski resort town, Aspen's history goes back to its roots as a silver-mining village tucked away in an isolated valley of the Rocky Mountains.
Get outdoors at Maroon Bells and Independence Pass. Step out of Aspen to go to Glenwood Springs and see Hanging Lake Trail, which is approximately 1h 25 min away. The adventure continues: hike along Maroon Lake Scenic Trail, appreciate the history behind The John Denver Sanctuary, and mingle with the ghosts of the past at Holden Marolt Mining & Ranching Museum.

The Town of Buena Vista is a Statutory Town in Chaffee County, Colorado, United States. Start off your visit on the 18th (Sat): take some stellar pictures from Collegiate Peaks Scenic Overlook, then make a trip to Interlaken Historic District, and then experience rural life at Jumpin' Good Goat Dairy. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: let the river carry you with a rafting and tubing tour and then cruise along Monarch Pass.
