Generally considered to be the oldest town established by European Americans in the Black Hills, Custer began as a mining town.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Custer: Keystone (Presidential Trail & Black Hills Helicopters) and Mammoth Site of Hot Springs (in Hot Springs). There's still lots to do: contemplate the waterfront views at Sylvan Lake, explore the striking landscape of Black Hills National Forest, cruise along Needles Highway, and appreciate the history behind Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
