The capital of the United States, the District of Columbia contains the lion's share of the country's most treasured monuments, memorials, and public museums.
Take a break from the city and head to Tidal Basin and National Zoological Park. National Air and Space Museum and Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History will appeal to museum buffs. Get out of town with these interesting Washington DC side-trips: Stony Man Mountain Hike (in Luray), Breezy Point Beach and Campground (in Chesapeake Beach) and Horseshoe Casino Baltimore (in Baltimore). On the 26th (Tue), take a stroll through The Magnificent Mile, then admire the masterpieces at The Art Institute of Chicago, and then appreciate the extensive heritage of Millennium Park. Keep things going the next day: see the interesting displays at Swedish American Museum, then meet the residents at Lincoln Park Zoo, and then stroll through Ohio Street Beach.
