The capital of the United States, the District of Columbia contains the lion's share of the country's most treasured monuments, memorials, and public museums.
Escape the urban bustle at Betterton Beach and Old Rag Mountain Hike. Get a sense of the local culture at Gettysburg Heritage Center and Chatham Manor. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Washington DC: Elms Beach Park (in Lexington Park), Chatham Manor (in Fredericksburg) and James Madison's Montpelier (in Montpelier Station). Spend the 14th (Sat) exploring nature at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts. Spend the 10th (Tue) exploring nature at Mary McLeod Bethune Council House. There's lots more to do: identify plant and animal life at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, witness the site of a historic battle at Antietam National Battlefield, contemplate the long history of Jennie Wade House, and admire the natural beauty at U.S. National Arboretum.
