With coastline on the west, south, and east, Newport is a maritime city with a rich history.
You'll get in some beach time at Race Point Beach and Herring Cove Beach. Cliff Walk and Ocean Drive Historic District will appeal to history buffs. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Newport: Mystic Seaport Museum (in Mystic), Stonington Lighthouse Museum (in Stonington) and Long Point (in Provincetown). Step out of the city life by going to Kancamagus Highway and Flume Gorge. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Smugglers Notch State Park and Marsh - Billings - Rockefeller National Historical Park. Escape the urban bustle at Stowe Recreation Path and Mount Mansfield State Forest. Step out of Stowe with an excursion to Burlington Bike Path in Burlington--about 52 minutes away. There's still lots to do: admire the sheer force of Moss Glen Falls and contemplate the long history of Tea at the Governor's House.
