Known for its Creole cuisine, rich musical tradition, and nearby swamps and plantations, New Orleans is one of the nation's oldest cities.
Visit French Quarter and Garden District for their historical value. Escape the urban bustle at Audubon Zoo and Insta-Gator Ranch & Hatchery. Get out of town with these interesting New Orleans side-trips: Vacherie (Oak Alley Plantation & Laura Plantation: Louisiana's Creole Heritage Site), Houmas House Plantation and Gardens (in Darrow) and Nottoway Plantation (in White Castle). Spend the 14th (Wed) exploring nature at Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve.
