Eureka is the principal city and county seat of Humboldt County in the Redwood Empire region of California. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Newton B. Drury Scenic Pkwy and Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary. Relax by the water at Black Sands Beach and Trinidad State Beach. Get out of town with these interesting Eureka side-trips: Lady Bird Johnson Grove (in Orick) and The Victorian Village of Ferndale (in Ferndale). Carmel-by-the-Sea, often simply called Carmel, is a city in Monterey County, California, United States, founded in 1902 and incorporated on October 31, 1916. Visiting Carmel River State Beach and Monterey Bay will get you outdoors. You'll get in some beach time at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and Pacific Grove Shoreline Parkway Marine Refuge. Change things up with a short trip to McWay Falls in Big Sur (about 56 minutes away). Next up on the itinerary: get up close to creatures of the deep with a dolphin and whale watching tour and admire the majestic nature at Point Lobos.
