Although urban sprawl remains synonymous with Houston, most of the city's tourist attractions lie within the relatively small downtown area, surrounded by diverse neighborhoods housing the nation's biggest African-American, Asian-American, and Latino communities.
Popular historic sites such as Glenwood Cemetery and San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site are in your itinerary. Escape the urban bustle at Surfside Beach and Water Wall. Change things up with these side-trips from Houston: Washington-on-the-Brazos (in Washington) and George Ranch Historical Park (in Richmond). An old colonial city and a busy cruise ship port less than an hour's drive from Houston, Galveston sits on Galveston Island and serves as a popular vacation destination for both domestic and international travelers.
Start off your visit on the 3rd (Sat): enjoy the sand and surf at Stewart Beach, get to know the fascinating history of The Seawall, and then get interesting insight from Tours. On the 4th (Sun), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: take a stroll through The Strand and then cast your line with a fishing tour.

You can drive from Houston to Galveston in an hour. Another option is to take a bus. Traveling from Houston in August, expect nights in Galveston to be about the same, around 80°F, while days are little chillier, around 90°F. Start off your visit on the 5th (Mon): witness a stunning natural landmark at Barton Springs Pool, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at St. Mary's Cathedral, then ponder the world of politics at Texas State Capitol, and finally wander the streets of 6th Street. Here are some ideas for day two: wander the streets of South Congress Avenue, snap pictures at Congress Avenue Bridge / Austin Bats, then walk around Mount Bonnell, and finally stroll through Lady Bird Lake Hike-and-Bike Trail.

Traveling by car from Galveston to Austin takes 4 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of shuttle and flight; or do a combination of bus, flight, and car. Expect a bit warmer weather when traveling from Galveston in August: highs in Austin hover around 98°F, while lows dip to 75°F. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 7th (Wed) to allow time for the car ride to Fredericksburg.

The city of Fredericksburg was settled by German immigrants in the mid-19th century, and has managed to retain its distinctly German charm.
Get some historical perspective at Admiral Nimitz State Historic Site and Pioneer Museum Complex. Get outdoors at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area and Longhorn Cavern State Park. Go for a jaunt from Fredericksburg to Hye to see Calais Winery about 34 minutes away. There's still lots to do: learn about all things military at National Museum of the Pacific War, relax in the rural setting at Wildseed Farms, do a tasting at Becker Vineyards (Winery), and pause for some serene contemplation at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
