Springfield is the capital of Illinois, but its real significance is as the hometown of Abraham Lincoln.
Let the collections at Lincoln Heritage Museum and Monticello Railway Museum capture your imagination. Children's Museum of Illinois and Illinois State Military Museum are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Get out of town with these interesting Springfield side-trips: All Wars Museum (in Quincy), Carthage (Carthage Jail & Kibbe Hancock Heritage Museum) and Mackinaw Valley Vineyard (in Mackinaw). There's lots more to do: examine the collection at Litchfield Museum & Route 66 Welcome Center, try for a hole-in-one at Pekin Park District, admire the masterpieces at Krannert Art Museum, and enjoy some diversion at Washington Park.
