Washington DC

The capital of the United States, the District of Columbia contains the lion's share of the country's most treasured monuments, memorials, and public museums.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Washington National Cathedral will appeal to history buffs. Step off the beaten path and head to National Portrait Gallery and Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine. Change things up with these side-trips from Washington DC: Baltimore (Fell's Point & Horseshoe Casino), Skyline Drive (in Shenandoah National Park) and Antietam National Battlefield (in Sharpsburg). Spend the 26th (Wed) exploring nature at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. There's much more to do: contemplate the long history of Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park, visit Georgetown, see a show at Ford's Theatre, and admire the masterpieces at Smithsonian American Art Museum.
