The Forest City

Maine's biggest and perhaps most vibrant city, Portland was established as a fishing village in 1633 and grew to become New England's largest port.
Step out of the city life by going to Walker's Point and Maine Wildlife Park. Your inner history buff will appreciate Pemaquid Point Lighthouse and Portland Head Light. Step out of Portland with an excursion to Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in Wells--about 40 minutes away. There's lots more to do: explore the landscape on two wheels at Eastern Promenade Trail, don't miss a visit to Portland Observatory, get interesting insight from Tours, and take a memorable drive along Coastal Highway U.S. 1.

Franconia is a town in Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States. Visiting Crawford Notch State Park and Franconia Notch will get you outdoors. Visit The Frost Place and Flume Gorge for their historical value. Get out of town with these interesting Franconia side-trips: Mount Washington Valley (in Mount Washington), Honeymoon Bridge (in Jackson) and Cascade Falls (in Woodstock). Traveling by car from Bar Harbor to Franconia takes 5.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and bus; or take a bus. Traveling from Bar Harbor in October, plan for slightly colder nights in Franconia, with lows around 36°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 27th (Wed) early enough to go by car to Stowe.

The Ski Capital of the East

Stowe bustles in winter when skiers and snowboarders flock here to challenge themselves on the long, steep trails careening down Vermont's tallest peak, Mt.
Moss Glen Falls has been added to your itinerary. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Stowe Mountain Resort and Smugglers Notch State Park. Visiting Toll Rd and Sterling Falls Gorge will get you outdoors. Step out of Stowe to go to Montpelier and see Camel's Hump, which is approximately 32 minutes away. There's much more to do: head outdoors with Bingham Falls, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Blessed Sacrament Church, hike along Stowe Pinnacle, and take a peaceful walk through Cady Hill Forest.

You can drive from Franconia to Stowe in 1.5 hours. Another option is to take a bus. October in Stowe sees daily highs of 60°F and lows of 39°F at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 2nd (Tue) so you can drive to Newport.

With coastline on the west, south, and east, Newport is a maritime city with a rich history.
Get some historical perspective at Castle Hill Lighthouse and St. Mary's Catholic Church. Explore hidden gems such as Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge and Sachuest Beach (Second Beach). Explore Newport's surroundings by going to Narragansett Beach (in Narragansett) and Kinney Azalea Garden (in Kingston). Prepare for a bit warmer weather when traveling from Stowe in November: high temperatures in Newport hover around 53°F and lows are around 38°F.
