A big city with a small-town feel, Portland is home to the country's biggest rose test garden, perched on a hill overlooking downtown.
Explore Portland's surroundings by going to Sokol Blosser Winery (in Dundee), Cannon Beach (Ecola State Park, Haystack Rock, &more) and Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail (in Mosier). There's still lots to do: look for gifts at Powell's City of Books, contemplate the long history of Columbia River Highway, take in nature's colorful creations at Portland Japanese Garden, and examine the collection at Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum.

Get out of town with these interesting Seattle side-trips: Whidbey Island Distillery (in Langley), Boeing Future of Flight (in Mukilteo) and Olympic National Park (Lower Big Quilcene Trail & Hood Canal). There's still lots to do: pick up some local products at Pike Place Market, take in panoramic vistas at Space Needle, stroll around Discovery Park, and observe the fascinating underwater world at Seattle Aquarium.
