Just a few metro stops away from the bustle of Washington D.C., Alexandria provides a respite from the fast-paced capital.
Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Torpedo Factory Art Center and R.H. Ballard Shop & Gallery. Venture out of the city with trips to Shenandoah Valley Artworks (in Strasburg), Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center (in Chantilly) and Moving Meadows Farm (in Culpeper). There's lots more to do: take a stroll through Old Town, stroll the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, appreciate the extensive heritage of The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and browse the different shops at Potomac Mills.

In September, daily temperatures in Alexandria can reach 82°F, while at night they dip to 65°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 23rd (Mon) early enough to travel back home.
