Springfield is the capital of Illinois, but its real significance is as the hometown of Abraham Lincoln.
Let the collections at Dickson Mounds Museum and Museum of the Grand Prairie capture your imagination. Step off the beaten path and head to Great Western Depot and Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Museum. When in Springfield, make a side trip to see Monticello Railway Museum in Monticello, approximately 1h 15 min away. And it doesn't end there: pause for some serene contemplation at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, snap pictures at Sugar Creek Covered Bridge, get advice or help at Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, and browse the exhibits of Lincoln Home National Historic Site.

For other places to visit, reviews, ratings, and other tourist information, refer to the Springfield driving holiday planner .

Expect a daytime high around 70°F in October, and nighttime lows around 47°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 27th (Sun) to allow enough time to travel back home.
