Bayou City

Although urban sprawl remains synonymous with Houston, most of the city's tourist attractions lie within the relatively small downtown area, surrounded by diverse neighborhoods housing the nation's biggest African-American, Asian-American, and Latino communities.
Venture out of the city with trips to Galveston (The Strand, Moody Mansion, &more). There's much more to do: get to know the resident critters at Houston Zoo, browse the exhibits of Cockrell Butterfly Center, get curious at The Houston Museum of Natural Science, and see the interesting displays at Space Center Houston.

To find photos, ratings, other places to visit, and tourist information, you can read our Houston trip maker app.

Des Moines to Houston is an approximately 4-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Des Moines in May, things will get a bit warmer in Houston: highs are around 84°F and lows about 68°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 7th (Sat) early enough to catch the flight back home.

Stretching over 965 km (600 mi) from Louisiana to the Mexican border, the Texas Gulf Coast is the state's main region for outdoor activity and vacation getaways. Dotted with funky seaside villages, expansive national parks, and beautiful golden sand beaches, the Gulf Coast is only an hour's drive from Houston, the state's cultural and commercial hub. For some historical sightseeing, wander through centuries-old downtown Galveston, or head to South Padre Island for a tropical holiday.
