Pittsburgh

— 29 nights

City of Bridges

Known primarily for its steel-related heritage and 446 bridges, Pittsburgh sits at the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers, which meet to form the Ohio River.
Kids will enjoy Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens and Bicycle Heaven. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Pittsburgh: Living Treasures Animal Park (in Jones Mills), Fallingwater (in Mill Run) and Ohiopyle (Cucumber Falls & Ohiopyle State Park). On the 25th (Fri), spend a day ambling around Mill Creek Park. There's still lots to do: take a stroll through Strip District, examine the collection at Flight 93 National Memorial, indulge in some culinary diversions at Burgh Bits and Bites Food Tours, and learn about wildlife with up-close encounters at National Aviary.

For photos, maps, traveler tips, and tourist information, go to the Pittsburgh road trip planning site.

In September, plan for daily highs up to 76°F, and evening lows to 57°F.
