Known primarily for its steel-related heritage and 446 bridges, Pittsburgh sits at the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers, which meet to form the Ohio River.
Bicycle Heaven and Pittsburgh Glass Center Studios will appeal to museum buffs. Take a break from the city and head to Mill Creek Park and Johnstown Flood National Memorial. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Pittsburgh: Cheat Lake Trail (in Morgantown), Laurel Mountain Ski Resort (in Boswell) and Coopers Rock State Forest (in Bruceton Mills). Spend the 17th (Mon) exploring nature at Friendship Hill National Historic Site. The adventure continues: look for all kinds of wild species at Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve, stroll through Rock Run Recreation Park, admire the landmark architecture of Hartwood Acres, and take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mount Washington.

Antietam National Battlefield and Washington National Cathedral will appeal to history buffs. Get outdoors at Tidal Basin and Audubon Naturalist Society Woodend Sanctuary. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Washington DC: Mount Vernon Trail (in Arlington), Old Rag Mountain Hike (in Shenandoah National Park) and Inside Ski Training Center (in Leesburg).
