Although urban sprawl remains synonymous with Houston, most of the city's tourist attractions lie within the relatively small downtown area, surrounded by diverse neighborhoods housing the nation's biggest African-American, Asian-American, and Latino communities.
Kids will enjoy Children's Museum of Houston and iFLY Indoor Skydiving - Houston (Memorial). Your inner history buff will appreciate Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens and Moody Mansion. Venture out of the city with trips to Orange (Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center & Blue Elbow Swamp), Fire Museum of Texas (in Beaumont) and Washington-on-the-Brazos (in Washington). Spend the 16th (Wed) exploring nature at Big Thicket National Preserve. There's lots more to do: take in the dramatic scenery at Water Wall, get up close to creatures of the deep with a dolphin and whale watching tour, examine the collection at National Museum of Funeral History, and play a few rounds at Hermann Park.
