The capital of the United States, the District of Columbia contains the lion's share of the country's most treasured monuments, memorials, and public museums.Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Devils Den and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Kids will enjoy Annapolis Historic District and James River. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Washington DC: Meadowlark Botanical Garden (in Vienna), Historic Downtown Frederick (in Frederick) and Shenandoah Caverns (in Shenandoah Caverns).
