When you arrive in tiny San Simeon, which lies halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, you can see why William Randolph Hearst chose this coastal locale for his famous hilltop castle.
Bring the kids along to Elephant Seal Rookery and Piedras Blancas. Step off the beaten path and head to Montana de Oro State Park and Oso Flaco Lake. You'll find plenty of places to visit near San Simeon: Pismo Pier (in Pismo Beach), Bluff Trail (in Los Osos) and Monarch Dunes Golf Club (in Nipomo).
