In many ways much more Asian than American, Honolulu is Hawaii's largest city and its center of government, transportation, commerce, and tourism.
Get outdoors at Waikiki Beach and Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. Bring the kids along to Kailua Beach Park and Ala Moana Center. Change things up with these side-trips from Honolulu: Haleiwa (Sunset Beach Park & Waimea Bay) and Polynesian Cultural Center (in Laie).
