Wind Cave National Park — 1 night

Wind Cave National Park presents one of the United States' few remaining intact prairies.
Kick off your visit on the 30th (Sun): stroll through Elk Mountain Nature Trail, identify plant and animal life at Wind Cave National Park, and then tour the pleasant surroundings at Rankin Ridge Nature Trail. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Black Elk Peak, admire all the interesting features of Needles Highway, and then identify plant and animal life at Windcross Conservancy.

Expect a bit warmer temperatures when traveling from Wind Cave National Park in May; daily highs in Rapid City reach 65°F and lows reach 45°F. Although Badlands National Park's name might not be the most inviting, its landscape of pinnacles, eroded buttes, spires, and an expansive, pristine mixed-grass prairie remain enticing.
Take a break from the city and head to Loop Road and Badlands National Park. Change things up with these side-trips from Badlands National Park: South Dakota's Original 1880 Town (in Murdo) and Hurley Butte Horseback Riding (in Interior). De Smet is a city in and the county seat of Kingsbury County, South Dakota, United States. On the 20th (Sun), immerse yourself in nature at Oakwood Lakes State Park and then contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Herman State Park. On the next day, steep yourself in history at Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Homes, then get engrossed in the history at De Smet Depot Museum, then steep yourself in history at Ingalls Homestead - Laura's Living Prairie, and finally explore the different monuments and memorials at De Smet Cemetery.
