Generally considered to be the oldest town established by European Americans in the Black Hills, Custer began as a mining town.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Black Hills National Forest and Needles Eye Tunnel. Get in touch with nature at Wind Cave National Park and Custer State Park. Change things up with these side-trips from Custer: Rankin Ridge Nature Trail (in Wind Cave National Park), Mammoth Site of Hot Springs (in Hot Springs) and Presidential Trail (in Keystone). Spend the 5th (Mon) exploring the underground world of Jewel Cave National Monument. There's still lots to do: explore the activities along Sylvan Lake, explore and take pictures at Wildlife Loop Road, and cruise along Iron Mountain Road.
