Originally a frontier mining town, Durango is known today for its scenic setting, outdoor activities, and the 1880s steam-powered railway that takes visitors through sections of the mountains where roads don't reach.
Appreciate the collections at Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and Museum and The Anasazi Heritage Center. Cliff Palace and Petroglyph Point Hike will appeal to history buffs. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Durango: Mesa Verde National Park (Long House & Balcony House) and Notah Dineh Trading Company and Museum (in Cortez). There's still lots to do: relax and float downstream with a rafting and tubing tour and stop by Earthen Vessel Gallery.
