With its strip malls and fast-food restaurants, Fairbanks appears a bit functional on first glance.

Palmer is the borough seat of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough in the U.S. state of Alaska. Kick off your visit on the 2nd (Thu): stroll through Independence Mine State Historical Park, then see the interesting displays at Iditarod Headquarters, and then indulge your thirst for a good beer at Bearpaw River Brewing Company. For most visitors to this part of the world, the wild part of Alaska starts at Seward, a small port city that takes advantage of the region's natural beauty.
Step out of Seward with an excursion to Harding Ice Field Trail in Kenai Fjords National Park--about 32 minutes away. Spend the 10th (Fri) exploring nature at Kenai Fjords National Park Visitor Center. There's much more to do: paddle through the water with a kayaking and canoeing tour, contemplate the waterfront views at Bear Creek Weir, meet the residents at Alaska SeaLife Center, and take an unforgettable tour with a helicopter tour.

Traveling by car from Homer to Seward takes 4 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of ferry and bus. In March in Seward, expect temperatures between 3°C during the day and -3°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 10th (Fri) to allow time to travel to Cordova.

The City and Borough of Sitka, formerly Novo-Arkhangelsk, or New Archangel under Russian rule, is a unified city-borough located on Baranof Island and the southern half of Chichagof Island in the Alexander Archipelago of the Pacific Ocean (part of the Alaska Panhandle), in the U.S. state of Alaska. Start off your visit on the 16th (Thu): see the interesting displays at Sheldon Jackson Museum, appreciate the extensive heritage of Sitka National Historic Park/Totem Park, then take in the exciting artwork at Island Artists Gallery, and finally get up close to creatures of the deep with a dolphin and whale watching tour.
