The City of Lights and Flowers

Home to nearly half of Alaska's population, the port city of Anchorage covers a staggering area of over 4,900 sq km (1,900 sq mi) surrounded by mountains.
Kids will enjoy Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and Rail Tours. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Anchorage: Whittier (Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, Boat Tours & Water Sports, &more), Bearpaw River Brewing Company (in Wasilla) and Palmer (Independence Mine State Historical Park, Bodenburg Butte, &more). Spend the 29th (Thu) behind the viewfinder with an inspiring photography tour. Make the 31st (Sat) an awe-inspiring day at Chugach State Park. The adventure continues: steep yourself in history at Alaska Native Heritage Center, stroll through Potter Marsh Bird Sanctuary, trek along Kincaid Park, and look for all kinds of wild species at Friends of Eagle River Nature.

Sacramento to Anchorage is an approximately 8-hour flight. You can also drive. The time zone difference moving from Pacific Standard Time to Alaska Standard Time is minus 1 hour. When traveling from Sacramento in July, plan for cooler days in Anchorage, with highs around 69°F, while nights are a bit cooler with lows around 55°F. On the 20th (Fri), you'll travel to Fairbanks.

The Golden Heart City

With its strip malls and fast-food restaurants, Fairbanks appears a bit functional on first glance.
You'll visit kid-friendly attractions like Pioneer Park and Santa Claus House. Step out of Fairbanks to go to Chena Hot Springs and see Chena Hot Springs Resort, which is approximately 1h 20 min away. Spend the 23rd (Mon) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. There's lots more to do: examine the collection at Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum, tour the pleasant surroundings at Angel Rocks Trail, gain insight at University of Alaska Fairbanks, and admire the natural beauty at Georgeson Botanical Garden.

Traveling by flight from Anchorage to Fairbanks takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In August in Fairbanks, expect temperatures between 67°F during the day and 49°F at night. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 29th (Sun) to allow time for the flight back home.
