For sixty years until 2003, most of the Isla de Vieques was closed off to the public, with the US Navy using the island's beaches and surrounding waters for drills and testing of new military machinery, such as bombs.
Kids will appreciate attractions like Sun Bay and La Chiva. Museum-lovers will get to explore Fortin Conde de Mirasol Museum and Siddhia Hutchinson Fine Art Gallery. There's still lots to do: look for all kinds of wild species at Wildlife Areas, kick back and relax at Playa Monte Santo, and stroll through Caracas Beach.

Do a combination of flight and car from Culebra to Isla de Vieques in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can ride a ferry. In July, plan for daily highs up to 36°C, and evening lows to 30°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 20th (Sat) so you can travel to Rincon.

Rincon

A seaside playground in the Caribbean, Rincon was a small agricultural and fishing town until it hosted the 1968 World Surfing Championship.
Escape the urban bustle at Horseback Riding Tours and Crashboat Beach. Visit El Faro Lighthouse and Parroquia San Jose De La Montana for their historical value. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Rincon: Casa Dona Bisa and Museo Historia San Sebastian (in San Sebastian), Parque Nacional de las Cavernas del Rio Camuy (in Camuy) and Cabo Rojo (Balneario de Boqueron, Playa Sucia, & more). There's much more to do: stroll through Jobos Beach, get engrossed in the history at Museum of the History of San German, discover the deep blue sea with a scuba or snorkeling tour, and admire the masterpieces at Heaven's Gate Convent (Porta Coeli).
