Galveston — 3 nights

An old colonial city and a busy cruise ship port less than an hour's drive from Houston, Galveston sits on Galveston Island and serves as a popular vacation destination for both domestic and international travelers.
Kids will appreciate attractions like Kemah Boardwalk and Moody Gardens. Go for a jaunt from Galveston to Kemah to see Boardwalk Beast about 38 minutes away. There's still lots to do: take a stroll through The Strand, see majestic marine mammals with BayWatch Dolphin Tours, look for gifts at Murdochs, and tour the pleasant surroundings at Stewart Beach.

For other places to visit, where to stay, photos, and more tourist information, you can read our Galveston trip itinerary planning website.

Houston to Galveston is an approximately 1-hour car ride. You can also take a bus. In May, plan for daily highs up to 82°F, and evening lows to 71°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 31st (Tue) so you can drive back home.

It's Island Time
Packed with vacation homes strung along a coastline of white sandy beaches, Galveston Island lies just 80 km (50 mi) southeast of Houston, so it attracts not only weekend revelers from the mainland, but also international tourists. At 43 km (27 mi) long and less than 5 km (3 mi) wide, the compact island is small enough to do most of your sightseeing on foot. Much of its area (with the exception of the town of Jamaica Beach) lies within the city limits of Galveston, a busy cruise ship port. If you plan to make Galveston your base on the island, visit at least one of the city's museums before heading to the beach.
