Known for its Creole cuisine, rich musical tradition, and nearby swamps and plantations, New Orleans is one of the nation's oldest cities.
Kick off your visit on the 11th (Thu): take a stroll through Royal Street and then appreciate the extensive heritage of Jackson Square. Here are some ideas for day two: see the interesting displays at Whitney Plantation, then admire the landmark architecture of Destrehan Plantation, then admire the masterpieces at The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden at NOMA, and finally wander the streets of Garden District.

Birmingham to New Orleans is an approximately 6-hour car ride. You can also do a combination of flight and car; or fly. Traveling from Birmingham in April, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be a bit warmer in New Orleans, with lows of 71°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 13th (Sat) so you can go by car to Baton Rouge.
