Roanoke

Roanoke is an independent city in the U.S. You'll visit kid-friendly attractions like Virginia Safari Park and Virginia Museum of Transportation. The Andy Griffith Museum and Frontier Culture Museum will appeal to museum buffs. Get out of town with these interesting Roanoke side-trips: Chateau Morrisette Winery (in Floyd), Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery (in Lexington) and Natural Bridge State Park (in Natural Bridge). There's still lots to do: immerse yourself in nature at Smith Mountain Lake State Park, do a tasting at Veritas Vineyard & Winery, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church.

To see other places to visit, ratings, where to stay, and more tourist information, use the Roanoke trip builder site.

In August, plan for daily highs up to 84°F, and evening lows to 66°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 12th (Sun) to allow time to travel back home.
