Amarillo — 43 nights

Known as "The Yellow Rose of Texas," Amarillo was once a series of ranches.
Get out of town with these interesting Amarillo side-trips: Canyon (Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Lighthouse Trail, &more), Groom (The Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ & Leaning Tower of Texas) and Caprock Canyons State Park (in Quitaque). Spend the 31st (Fri) exploring nature at Lake Meredith National Recreation Area. There's much more to do: get a taste of life in the country at Cowgirls and Cowboys in the West, get engrossed in the history at American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum, don't miss a visit to Cadillac Ranch, and admire nature's wide array of creatures at Amarillo Zoo.

For ratings, other places to visit, where to stay, and more tourist information, you can read our Amarillo journey planning tool.

In January, plan for daily highs up to 52°F, and evening lows to 24°F. You'll set off for home on the 20th (Thu).
