Founded in 1835, the city of Aiken was named after William Aiken, the president of the South Carolina Railroad. Get out of town with these interesting Aiken side-trips: Santee State Park (in Santee) and Congaree National Park (in Hopkins). Next up on the itinerary: take in nature's colorful creations at Hopelands Gardens, buy something for everyone on your list at Riverfront Antique Mall, steep yourself in history at Redcliffe Plantation State, and take a peaceful walk through Hitchcock Woods.

For ratings, more things to do, other places to visit, and more tourist information, you can read our Aiken journey planner .

In July, plan for daily highs up to 90°F, and evening lows to 70°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 5th (Thu) to allow enough time to travel back home.
