As the closest town to a national park known for its archeological dwellings, Cortez sits along ancient trails that native Puebloan tribes have used for millennia.
Venture out of the city with trips to Mesa Verde National Park (Cliff Palace, Balcony House, & more), Durango (River Rafting & Tubing & Historic Downtown Durango) and Balloon Rides (in Albuquerque). And it doesn't end there: delve into the distant past at Hovenweep National Monument, explore the stunning scenery at Dolores Canyon, gain insight at Cortez Cultural Center, and admire the masterpieces at Notah Dineh Trading Company and Museum.

For photos, traveler tips, maps, and tourist information, you can read our Cortez day trip planning site .

Expect a daytime high around 72°F in May, and nighttime lows around 38°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 4th (Tue) to allow enough time to travel back home.
