The Oleander City

An old colonial city and a busy cruise ship port less than an hour's drive from Houston, Galveston sits on Galveston Island and serves as a popular vacation destination for both domestic and international travelers.
You've now added NOAA Fisheries Service Galveston Laboratory to your itinerary. There's much more to do: get to know the fascinating history of The Seawall, make a trip to Tree Sculptures, learn about all things military at Galveston Naval Museum, and steep yourself in history at Moody Mansion.

To see photos, more things to do, ratings, and tourist information, use the Galveston online day trip planner.

New York City to Galveston is an approximately 9-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. Due to the time zone difference, you'll gain 1 hour traveling from New York City to Galveston. In January, Galveston is much hotter than New York City - with highs of 61°F and lows of 48°F. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 15th (Fri) to allow enough time to travel back home.

It's Island Time
Packed with vacation homes strung along a coastline of white sandy beaches, Galveston Island lies just 80 km (50 mi) southeast of Houston, so it attracts not only weekend revelers from the mainland, but also international tourists. At 43 km (27 mi) long and less than 5 km (3 mi) wide, the compact island is small enough to do most of your sightseeing on foot. Much of its area (with the exception of the town of Jamaica Beach) lies within the city limits of Galveston, a busy cruise ship port. If you plan to make Galveston your base on the island, visit at least one of the city's museums before heading to the beach.
