Sitting on the shores of Alaska's longest fjord and surrounded by mountains, the port city of Haines boasts spectacular scenery.
Haines is known for wildlife, museums, and nature. Your trip includes some of its best attractions: look for all kinds of wild species at The Kroschel Wildlife Center, sample the fine beverages at Port Chilkoot Distillery, steep yourself in history at Fort William H. Seward National Historic Landmark, and see the interesting displays at American Bald Eagle Foundation.

Ketchikan to Haines is an approximately 9-hour combination of ferry and flight. You can also ride a ferry. Traveling from Ketchikan in November, things will get little chillier in Haines: highs are around 34°F and lows about 26°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 10th (Thu) early enough to travel to Palmer.

Palmer — 2 nights

Palmer is the borough seat of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough in the U.S. state of Alaska. On the 11th (Fri), see Off-Road Tours, then stroll through Pioneer Falls, and then tour the pleasant surroundings at Independence Mine State Historical Park. Here are some ideas for day two: relax in the rural setting at Reindeer Farm and then take a pleasant ride with a tour on horseback.

Traveling by combination of ferry and flight from Haines to Palmer takes 6.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of ferry, train, and bus. Traveling from Haines in November, expect Palmer to be a bit cooler, temps between 29°F and 17°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 12th (Sat) early enough to travel back home.
