Providence has undergone a major upgrade in recent years, transforming from a rough-around-the-edges industrial city into an epicenter of culture.

Here are some ideas for day two: grab your bike and head to Blackstone River Bikeway, explore the striking landscape of Roger Williams National Memorial, and then get a new perspective on things with La Gondola.

The Forest City

Maine's biggest and perhaps most vibrant city, Portland was established as a fishing village in 1633 and grew to become New England's largest port.

When in Portland, make a side trip to see Marginal Way Walkway in Ogunquit, approximately Ogunquit away. There's still lots to do: steep yourself in history at Wadsworth-Longfellow House, see the interesting displays at Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company and Museum, indulge your thirst for a good beer at Bissell Brothers Brewing Company, and do a tasting at Maine Mead Works.
