Springfield is the capital of Illinois, but its real significance is as the hometown of Abraham Lincoln.
Get out of town with these interesting Springfield side-trips: Railsplitter Covered Wagon (in Lincoln), Lincolns New Salem State Park (in Petersburg) and Allerton Park & Retreat Center (in Monticello). There's still lots to do: steep yourself in history at Dana-Thomas House, take in nature's colorful creations at Lincoln Memorial Garden, learn about all things military at Illinois State Military Museum, and get engrossed in the history at Lincoln Home National Historic Site.

For where to stay, topicsMoreInfo.option.ratings, reviews, and more tourist information, go to the Springfield trip builder.

If you are flying in from India, the closest major aiports are Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport, General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport and Central Illinois Regional Airport at Bloomington-Normal. In April, plan for daily highs up to 21°C, and evening lows to 7°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 30th (Thu) so you can travel back home.
