Albuquerque remains one of the state's secret jewels, as its tourist attractions are often overshadowed by the more popular holiday destination of Santa Fe.
On the 30th (Fri), make a trip to Madonna of the Trail, then enjoy unforgettable views with a balloon tour, and then get to know the fascinating history of Albuquerque Old Town. Keep things going the next day: get a new perspective on nature at Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, get to know the resident critters at ABQ BioPark Zoo, explore the striking landscape at Petroglyph National Monument, then pause for some serene contemplation at Capilla de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, and finally look for gifts at The Candy Lady.

Traveling by car from Santa Fe to Albuquerque takes an hour. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus; or take a train. Traveling from Santa Fe in October, Albuquerque is somewhat warmer at night with lows of 48°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 1st (Sun) to allow enough time to drive to Taos.

Many residents have shunned fast-paced city living for Taos's laid-back vibe and blend of Spanish, Native American, and Anglo cultures.
On the 1st (Sun), take a memorable drive along High Road to Taos, then snap pictures at Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, then admire the masterpieces at Millicent Rogers Museum, and finally don't miss a visit to Taos County Courthouse Murals.
