Washington DC — 49 nights

The capital of the United States, the District of Columbia contains the lion's share of the country's most treasured monuments, memorials, and public museums.Get out of town with these interesting Washington DC side-trips: Gettysburg (Savor Gettysburg Food Tours, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, &more), Larriland Farm (in Woodbine) and Emmitsburg (National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton & National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes). Spend the 15th (Sat) exploring nature at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine. There's still lots to do: explore the world behind art at National Gallery of Art, pause for some photo ops at Lincoln Memorial, get to know the resident critters at Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute, and take an in-depth tour of United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
For other places to visit, more things to do, ratings, and more tourist information, read Washington DC road trip planning website.
In September, plan for daily highs up to 82°F, and evening lows to 65°F.
